Historic Milestone Achieved in Lake Ontario
On August 24, 2018, Crosslake Fibre celebrated the successful installation of a major communications milestone—the first submarine fibre-optic cable system in the Great Lakes. Using the cable-laying vessel C.S. IT Intrepid, the team laid 60 km of 96 fibre-pair cable beneath Lake Ontario, embedding it securely into the lakebed using a 4-metre-high tethered plough. The burial spanned depths from 1 metre on average to a maximum of 142 metres, reinforcing the project’s technical precision and engineering integrity.
